Recap of the year 2017

Can’t believe we are already in the last week of the year. I know we all agree on how fast time flies! And it flies especially quickly when you are having fun travelling. It was quite an incredible year behind me and I love to do this recap post to remember all the great places I visited. (You can also check out my 2016 recap.)

So let’s see what this year brought me in travel.

1. Travelling done in 8 countries

Austria

This neighbouring country of Slovenia has many amazing corners. This year I revisited Klagenfurt in summer time and went to the Pyramidenkogel for the second time. However, in the meantime from my first visit they build new 905 meters high tower that offers amazing views of all the Carinthia region and Wörthersee lake. Austria is also beautiful in winter time, because its many towns and cities turn into winter wonderland with many Chirstmas markets and beautiful Christmas decorations. This year I visited lovely towns of Kitzbühel and Zell am See. And let me tell you – Austria has the best mulled wine I tried so far.

Croatia

I am continuing the tradition of a few weekend getaways in Croatia. This year I spend a weekend in Novigrad, another in Premantura and one more in Puntižela. Because Istria region is so small, I had an opportunity to explore even more beautiful cities and places like Cape Kamenjak, Poreč, Pula and Rovinj. Some of them are included in my list of the best cities of Croatia’s Istria and Kvarner regions.

Egypt

Revisiting Cairo made me like it even more and visiting Alexandria for the first time was an amazing experience. Although my visit was near the time of one of the terrorist bombing attacks that happened in Egypt this year, I felt completely safe and enjoyed no tourist crowds. You can read my opinion in travelling in changed safety conditions here.

Germany

Looking for a perfect city weekend getaway? Munich can definitely go on top of that list. It has a lot to offer – from nice sightseeing spots to great food. My new favourite became German pretzels!

Portugal

I absolutely loved everything about my visit to the Portuguese island of Madeira. From gorgeous nature, to cute little towns, amazingly delicious food and good wine, breath-taking views, natural lava pools, do I need to go on? It was a hard pick, but you can check my top 5 experiences in Madeira here.

Slovenia

I kicked off the year 2017 beside lake Bled and spend the first weekend of the year in Bohinj, which is one of the most beautiful parts of my beloved home country Slovenia. I returned to Bled in summer time to escape the heat with swimming in the lake and once again in the winter, to check out snowy views and nice Christmas market. Although I am not the most successful, but during the year I try to do as much sightseeing around home as I can. This year I spent a day in Slovenia’s second biggest city Maribor and did a road trip to the Alpine region with stops at Zelenci, Kranjska Gora, Vršič, Trenta, Soča Gorge, Most na Soči and Kanal.

South Africa

My longest adventure ever was 40 days of travelling in South Africa and Swaziland. You can imagine that in more than a month one can do quite some sightseeing and collect many amazing memories. I Started exploring South Africa in Cape Town, did a day trip to Cape Peninsula and a wine tasting trip to Stellenbosch, continued my travels to the Garden Road and Wild Cost with stops at Hermanus, Knysna, Plettneberg Bay, Port Elizabeth, Chintsa and Durban. On my way to Johannesburg and Pretoria I stopped in the Northern Drakensberg area and visited also Kruger National Park with the Blyde River Canyon.

Swaziland

Not having rent-a-car and depending on a public transport with absolutely no signal on my phone made visiting Swaziland even more interesting adventure. I stayed in the capital Mbabane and managed to visit also Lobamba and Mantenga Nature Reserve.

3 new countries visited

For the second year in a row I added three new countries to my “visited” list. This year I enjoyed Portugal, South Africa and Swaziland for the first time. In total my collection of visited countries now counts 40. Can’t wait to grow this number!
