Slovenia, my dearest home country, has many beautiful corners despite its smallness. One of the most breath-taking parts is Triglav National Park with Julian Alps and Lake Bohinj. As it happens this region is perfect for a weekend getaway.
I spent first weekend of 2017 in Bohinj and I it was a perfect weekend trip! As I’ve been here many times, this weekend was mostly meant for charging my batteries and enjoying Bohinj’s natural beauties. I’m sharing with you my itinerary for Bohinj and adding some ideas what to do if you want to spend a more active weekend here.
SATURDAY
Start your day in Ribičev Laz where you can see the most famous look of Bohinj. The stone bridge, the Church of St. John the Baptist and the lake itself. Walk around hidden bays of the lake, breath the fresh mountain air and admire the view of the Julian Alps. Lake Bohinj is a part of the only national park in the country named Triglav National Park.
Don’t miss out on the statute of four men who were the first to climb the highest Slovenian mountain Triglav. They are standing at the only spot where you can see Triglav from the Lake Bohinj. If you will fall in love with Bohinj, as most people do, you can have a little spot of your own here with adopting a bench.
Visit also the nearby alpine villages like Stara Fužina. It is full of renewed charming alpine houses and farms and the river Mostnica and surrounding high mountains add a special atmosphere. There you also have the Aljaž’s tower, the replica of the tower standing at the top of Triglav. It’s named after Jakob Aljaž, Slovenian composer and priest, who bought the top of the mountain and put the tower there. He also wrote a song about Triglav.
More options:
Climb one of the surrounding mountains of the Julian Alps, walk to the waterfall Slap Savica or visit the Mostnica george. See some history of the region in Alpine Dairy Farming Museum in Stara Fužina. You can also take the cable car up the mountain Vogel and see lake Bohinj from above. In winter time Vogel is a ski resort and it happens to be my favorite one in Slovenia!
SUNDAY
It’s a perfect day for swimming! In summer time Lake Bohinj is the best for a refreshing swim. Its shores offer lovely bays where you can sunbath or enjoy in the shadows of surrounding trees. If you are visiting in lower temperatures go swimming in Aquapark Bohinj in Bohinjska Bistrica, a nearby city.
After enjoying in the pool you have to eat some local delicacies, like ričet, jota, matevž or mushroom soup with buckwheat žganci. Try also traditional Slovenian dessert štrudel. I recommend restaurant Štrud’l in Bohinjska Bistrica. It also has a nice ambient.
More options:
Spend a day in more known tourist destinations Bled, which is just half an hour drive from Bohinj. Walk around the lake, take typical pletnja boat to the island in the centre of the lake, eat their most famous cake blejska kremšnita and climb up the castle hill to see the medieval Castle Bled.

Beautiful photos, Sorry that there weren’t any snow. It will be like a fairy tale.
Yes, with snow it would be even prettier! Next time maybe! 🙂
Is there a method of transport to get from the bus station in Bhonij to the cable car?
Yes, there is a public bus. You can check the timetable here https://www.ap-ljubljana.si/https://www.ap-ljubljana.si/. 🙂
