Recap of the year 2024

It was a year filled with shorter, but unforgettable family trips, as we successfully embarked on a mission of at least one adventure each month. I also began my new and exciting job at the airport, which led to my first, second, and third business trip abroad. However, to be honest, it was also a year with many hard life challenges, showing the true importance of health, family, and cherishing each moment with your loved ones. As I reflect on the year and note all the adventures we’ve had, I am truly grateful for all beautiful memories we created in 2024.

1. Travelling done in 7 countries

Austria

In February we had an amazing weekend trip to Austrian capital Vienna. It is a truly great city that offers something for everyone. As we were travelling as a family, including sights for my daughter in our itinerary was a must. I am sharing our favourite activities in Vienna for a toddler here.

Belgium

I visited Brussels in November for a very insightful workshop about crisis communication in case of cyber-attack. It was a work trip and we stayed in the city just for one night. But we managed to have a quick evening walk to the Grand-Place, saw Manneken Pis, eat Belgian fries and waffles, and also tried a few types of Belgian beer.

Croatia

A trip to our neighbouring country is almost a must each year. We usually visit its seaside, but this March we drove to the capital Zagreb and visited its zoo. It is situated in a beautiful Maksimir Park, which also has an amazing children’s playground.

Germany

My first ever abroad work trip was to Frankfurt this August. And although I quickly found out, that at work trips you really don’t have a lot of time to explore, we did have a special stop at the airport city. In the evening, we visited Getaway Gardens Ocean Club. It’s a sandy beach bar with a surf arena and great burgers, which you can eat while admiring planes above your head. In total, I was at the Frankfurt Airport four times this year. In November I had to spend the night there again, due to missed connection flight. I also had a transfer through Munich Airport during Octoberfest. There were plenty opportunities to buy some special (beer) souvenirs.

Greece

A country that is a synonym for an island escape, has also some amazing beaches on the mainland. In September I visited Thessaloniki for my company’s conference on public relations. Beside amazing program and a tour of the airport, we ate too much delicious Greek food, and visited some special spots of the city. We also had a day trip to the Halkidiki peninsula and I loved the views of the green scenery and sea. I was truly shocked at how beautiful the beach in Port Carras was. We also did a wine tasting at a local vinery Domaine Porto Carras.

Italy

For our summer getaway, we choose a special corner of Italy – the island of Ischia. Just a short flight from Venice to Naples, a ride on waves with a speed boat and we were at a true paradise. Small Italian towns, green hills, pristine beaches, clear sea, delicious food and so many corners to explore. We stayed in a small village called Lacco Ameno, in a walking distance to the best beach on the island – Spaggia San Montano. We took a bus to visit Castello Aragonese, Forio, Giardini Poseidon, Ischia city, and Sant’ Angelo. Before returning home, we explored Naples and also visited Pompei.

Slovenia

I am so happy that in 2024 we explored our home Ljubljana and also did a few of amazing trips around Slovenia. In Ljubljana, beside many everyday walks, we visited Cukrarna Gallery, cherry blossoms near Zoo, Ljubljana Botanical Garden, City Museum Ljubljana, Rožnik, Tivoli Park, Ljubljana Book Fair, and enjoyed Christmas lights in December.

One of my favourite weekend trips was visiting Velika Planina, Kamnik city and Arboretum Volčji Potok in May. We stayed at wooden cottages in the style of shepherds’ huts and enjoyed our time in the region. My husband & I did a similar trip a few years back and I shared more about it here. We visited Arboretum a few more times thorough the year, because my daughter loves their playground. One of the visits was in Christmas time and it was really lovely decorated with all the lights. Their hot chocolate was also very enjoyable.

In January we swam in thermal waters of Thermana Laško and did a walk to gorgeous Tamar Valley near Kranjska Gora. In May we did a day trip to Cerknica Lake, one of the largest intermittent lakes in Europe. We chose one of their great walking paths, called Drvošec. I really loved also our trip to the Logar Valley in July, one of the most beautiful Alpine glacial valleys in Europe, with a visit to the Fairytale Forest. Another favourite lake of ours, Lake Bohinj, is a trip we traditionally do every summer and we didn’t miss on it also this year.  In autumn we climbed Mengška koča and visited Tree Top Walk Pohorje on Rogla. In December we also enjoyed Celje, which this year was named the European Christmas City 2025.

3. Life lately

New job

In June I started working at the biggest Slovenian airport. Now I get to see airplanes taking off from my office. I still work in corporate communications. However, just going to the airport every day, learning all the interesting behind the scenes information about this unique environment, gathering content from the terminal and the ramp – I find it all truly interesting. The airport lover in me is having a blast, and the travel lover is wishing to be on planes I am admiring each day. And I did actually get to travel abroad with this job, I visited Belgium, Germany, and Greece.
